“When kids see themselves on the walls of their home, it says: you belong here.”
Dr. David Krauss, Psychologist
The Worry I Hear So Often
In the past few weeks, I’ve had several messages from parents across Perthshire and Stirlingshire who are booking a shoot but feeling anxious.
“My child is autistic — I’m worried they won’t sit still or smile. If we just get one where he’s looking at the camera, I’ll be happy.”
That always tugs at my heart. Because every parent deserves beautiful photos of their children. And every child — neurodivergent or not — deserves to see their own face smiling back at them from the walls of their home.
Why Photos Matter So Much
It’s not just about pretty pictures.
Psychologists have found that seeing themselves in family photos can boost a child’s confidence and sense of belonging. Dr. David Krauss, who has studied the psychology of family photography, explains that displaying children’s photos at home helps them feel valued and secure in their family unit.
For neurodivergent children, that visible affirmation — “I am loved. I am part of this.” — is powerful.
And that’s exactly what I want families to feel when they visit my Auchterarder photography studio, right in the heart of Perthshire.
Making Every Session Work — Their Way
Maybe it’s because I have a 19-year-old autistic nephew who was diagnosed at two. Maybe it’s because I’ve photographed so many wonderful neurodivergent children from across Perth, Stirling, and beyond. Or maybe it’s because I believe every session should be fun, flexible, and free of pressure.
Whatever the reason, when you bring your child to JB Moments Photography, you’ll never hear me say “sit still” or “look this way.”
We go at their pace.
We make the space calm, safe, and sensory-friendly.
If the set needs to change — fine.
If we need breaks — absolutely.
If they want to explore, jump, or bring a favourite toy — brilliant.
Because connection comes first. The smiles (and the photos) naturally follow.
The Magic in Real Moments
Some of my favourite galleries come from families who were convinced they’d never get “a good shot.” Children who didn’t want to pose or make eye contact — but who ended up giggling, exploring, and showing me their world in their own way.
And those photos? Always full of warmth, laughter, and love.
The kind that parents treasure for years — because they show their child exactly as they are.
A Little Reassurance for Parents
Please don’t let worry stop you from booking a session.
Your child doesn’t need to perform, sit still, or smile on cue to create something beautiful.
What I capture isn’t perfection — it’s connection. It’s love. It’s the story of your family, told honestly and beautifully.
Every child deserves to be seen — and to know they belong.
