You Don’t Need to Know How to Pose for Personal Branding Photos (That’s My Job)

Categories

If the thought of booking a branding shoot fills you with dread because you “don’t know what to do”, you’re not alone. Here’s why you don’t need to know how to pose, and why that’s actually my job.

“I hate having my photo taken.”

If I had £1 for every time I’ve heard that…

Therapists.

Authors.

Beauty therapists.

Coaches.

Photographers.

Accountants.

Dog groomers.

Illustrators.

Almost every personal branding client who walks into my studio starts with exactly the same sentence.

And almost every one of them leaves saying…

“That was actually really fun.”

If you’ve been putting off booking branding photos because you think you aren’t photogenic or don’t know how to pose, let me tell you a little secret…

You’re not supposed to.

That’s literally my job.

The biggest myth about branding photography

People imagine they’re expected to turn up and suddenly become a model.

Perfect posture.

Perfect smile.

Knowing exactly where to put their hands.

Honestly?

If that was the job description, I’d be out of business.

The truth is that the best branding photographs don’t happen because someone knows how to pose.

They happen because someone feels comfortable enough to forget the camera is there.

Real people make the best branding photos

The businesses I photograph aren’t influencers.

They’re real people running brilliant businesses.

A beauty therapist helping clients feel their best.

An author making readers laugh.

An illustrator bringing stories to life.

A coach helping people achieve things they never thought possible.

None of them spend weekends practising poses in front of a mirror.

That’s exactly why the photographs work.

Sometimes my clients explain it better than I can

One lovely client recently sent me a review that made me smile because he perfectly described what I hope every branding session feels like.

“Jenny has a wonderful way of making you forget the camera is even there. What I expected to be an awkward and uncomfortable experience turned into something genuinely enjoyable.”

Then he said something that really stuck with me.

“Looking through the images, I found myself seeing a version of me that I rarely see.”

That, right there, is why I do what I do.

Personal branding photography isn’t about creating a version of you that doesn’t exist.

It’s about helping you see yourself the way your clients already do.

Confident.

Approachable.

Professional.

Someone they’d happily work with.

Look at the photographs in this blog

Take another look.

None of these people are professional models.

One is an author.

One runs a beauty business.

One is an illustrator.

One is a coach.

Four completely different personalities.

Four completely different businesses.

But they all arrived with exactly the same worry.

“I’m not very photogenic.”

Now look at their photographs.

They don’t look posed.

They look like themselves.

That’s always the goal.

My job is to notice the moments you don't

Instead of telling you to “look natural” (possibly the least helpful instruction ever invented)…

We chat.

We laugh.

We move around.

We talk about your business.

Sometimes you’re making coffee.

Sometimes you’re showing me your products.

Sometimes you’re writing notes.

Sometimes you’re simply talking about what you love.

While you’re concentrating on something else…

I’m watching for the smile that’s actually yours.

The expression your clients recognise.

The confidence that appears when you stop thinking about the camera.

That’s the photograph we’re looking for.

"But I'm awkward..."

Good.

So am I.

I’m actually quite an introvert.

If someone pointed a camera at me without any direction I’d probably forget where my arms go too.

That’s why I never expect clients to perform.

I guide.

I encourage.

I demonstrate.

I make terrible jokes.

Eventually people stop thinking about the camera altogether.

And that’s when the magic happens.

Your clients don't need perfection

People buy from people.

Not polished robots.

Your future clients want to know:

Can I trust you?

Would I enjoy working with you?

Do you know what you’re talking about?

Do you seem approachable?

A genuine smile answers those questions far better than the perfect pose ever could.

The transformation I love most

It isn’t when I deliver the gallery.

It’s when someone looks at the back of the camera halfway through the session and says…

“Wait… is that actually me?”

That’s the moment confidence replaces nerves.

That’s the moment they stop worrying about how they look and start enjoying the experience.

And when they receive their gallery, they’re often surprised.

Not because I’ve turned them into someone else.

Because I’ve shown them the version of themselves that everyone else has been seeing all along.

Ready when you are

If you’ve been putting off branding photos because you’re worried you’ll feel awkward…

You’re exactly the sort of client I love photographing.

We’ll chat.

We’ll laugh.

I’ll worry about the posing.

You just need to turn up.

Whether you’re an author, coach, beauty therapist, creative, photographer or small business owner, your clients deserve to see the real person behind your business.

I’d love to help you show them.
