Cake Smash Alternatives: First Birthday Photos Without the Mess

Cake Smash Alternatives: First Birthday Photos Without the Mess

Categories

There’s something really special about a first birthday.

One whole year of tiny toes, sleepless nights, first smiles and first steps. It deserves to be celebrated properly.

For lots of families, that celebration comes in the form of a cake smash photoshoot, and I absolutely offer those in my studio.

But… they’re not for everyone.

Some little ones hate the texture.
Some parents don’t love the mess.
Some just want something a bit different.

So if you’re sitting there thinking, “I’m not sure a cake smash is for us…”  You’re in exactly the right place.

What a Cake Smash Session Looks Like (In My Studio)

Before we talk alternatives, let me show you what a typical session looks like.

Because when they work, they are a LOT of fun.

Step 1: Portraits

We always start with clean, calm portraits.

Just your baby as they are right now, sitting, standing, wobbling, smiling (or not, which is also fine!).

You can include parents or siblings here, too if you’d like.

This part gives you those timeless images before the chaos begins.

Step 2: The Cake Smash

Then comes the cake.

Some babies dive straight in.
Some poke it cautiously.
Some just stare at it like, “What exactly do you expect me to do with this?”

And all of those reactions are perfect.

There’s no pressure. Just curiosity, mess and a lot of personality.Baby boy enjoying a cake smash photoshoot with colourful sprinkles for first birthday

Step 3: Splash Time

And finally… the clean-up.

A little tub, warm water, bubbles and usually a very happy baby.

This is often where we get some of the biggest smiles of the session.

But What If Cake Isn’t Your Thing?

And this is where it gets fun.

Because celebrating a first birthday doesn’t have to involve cake at all.

In fact, some of my favourite sessions are the ones that are a little bit different.

Cake Smash Alternatives

1. Fruit Smash

Think berries, watermelon, yoghurt, something colourful, textured and a little bit different.

It’s still messy (in a good way), but it often feels fresher and more natural.

Plus… fewer sugar crashes afterwards 😉

2. Bubble Bath Session

Skip straight to the splash!

A bubbly bath setup with toys, ducks and lots of giggles.

Perfect for little ones who love water and movement.

3. Balloon Play

A simple setup with balloons can be surprisingly fun.

Grabbing, chasing, popping (or trying to), and lots of interaction.

Clean, colourful and very expressive.

4. Favourite Toys Theme

Bring along their favourite things.

Teddy.
Books.
That one toy they carry everywhere.

These sessions feel really personal, a snapshot of who they are right now.

5. Spaghetti or Food Play

Yes… this is chaotic.

But in the best possible way.

Soft pasta, finger foods or anything they can explore safely.

Expect mess. Expect laughter. Expect brilliant photos.

6. Outdoor First Birthday Session

If the weather allows, we can take it outside.

Natural light, space to explore and a more relaxed feel.

Perfect for little adventurers.

7. Simple “Birthday Portrait” Session

No props. No mess.

Just your baby, beautifully photographed at this milestone.

Sometimes that’s all you really need.

8. Family-Focused Session

Because let’s be honest…

This milestone isn’t just about them.

It’s about everything you’ve been through as a family in that first year.

These are often the images parents treasure most.

9. Musical Play Session

If your little one is more into noise than cake… this could be the perfect option.

Think tambourines, maracas, xylophones, anything they can shake, tap or bash (enthusiastically).

It’s still playful.
It’s still a bit chaotic.
But instead of icing everywhere, it’s all about sound, movement and personality.

And honestly, some of the best expressions come from this kind of free play.

A little note for parents… it might be messy for the ears rather than the floor 😄

The Most Important Thing

There is no “right” way to celebrate a first birthday session.

The best session is the one that suits your baby’s personality and what you’ll actually enjoy.

Whether that’s cake, bubbles, balloons or just a cuddle.

Thinking About Booking?
