What to Expect From Your Cake Smash & Splash Session: A Fun Guide for Parents

You’ve booked a Cake Smash & Splash session—yay! Get ready for messy giggles, icing-covered noses, and some seriously cute memories. To help you feel totally prepared (and excited), here’s everything you need to know before you arrive at the JB Moments Photography studio.

Before the Bash: What to Bring

Think of it like packing for the most adorable party ever:

  • Your baby’s favourite snacks – Sometimes, a few puffs or rice cakes help little ones warm up.

  • A drink – All that smashing and splashing is thirsty work!

  • An outfit for smashing – This will get messy. Think cute, colourful, and okay to get caked.

  • A splash outfit – Something adorable and splash-friendly (think swimsuits, swim nappies, or just birthday suit + bubbles!)

  • A clean outfit for heading home – Your little one will leave squeaky clean but might be a bit damp.

  • A towel & wipes – For post-bath cuddles and cleanup.

The Cake: Sweet Details

I provide the cake! It’s a yummy, baby-friendly vanilla sponge made fresh locally. If your little one has allergies or intolerances, just let me know and I’ll work with you to find the best alternative.

Want to bring your own cake? No problem—just check in with me beforehand so we can make sure it’s camera-friendly (some colours don’t photograph well or stain too much).

The Session: How It Flows

  1. The Portraits – We start with some clean, pre-cake portraits so you get a few tidy, timeless shots.

  2. The Smash – Let the chaos begin! I capture every delighted expression and frosting-covered finger.

  3. The Splash – Into the tub for bubbles, giggles, and sweet cleanup shots that everyone loves.

Expect the whole session to take about an hour. I work at your baby’s pace, with plenty of time for cuddles and breaks.

Tips for a Happy Baby

  • Schedule the session after a nap and avoid just before or after a meal.

  • If your little one hasn’t had cake before, do a trial run a few days before. Let them explore the texture and taste!

  • Bring something familiar—like a toy or blanket—for comfort.

Final Thought

A Cake Smash & Splash isn’t just about cute photos (though you’ll get plenty). It’s about celebrating this big milestone and capturing your baby’s one-of-a-kind personality in a way that’s fun and full of joy.
