How to Prepare for Your Family Photo Session (Without the Stress!)

So, you’ve booked a family photo shoot — hooray!
Now you’re wondering… What should we wear? Will the kids behave? What if it rains?
First: take a deep breath. I’ve got you.

At JB Moments Photography, I’m all about capturing the real stuff: the giggles, the snuggles, the personalities. This guide will help you feel relaxed, organised, and ready to enjoy your session — chaos and all!

1. Rested + Fed = Happy Faces

Let’s start with the basics:

  • If your little one still naps, plan around that schedule.

  • Don’t arrive hungry — have a snack or light meal beforehand.

  • Bring drinks (and bribes!). A wee treat goes a long way if attention spans start to wobble.

Bonus Tip: If we’re heading outdoors, pack a small water bottle for each person. Staying hydrated helps everyone feel good — even in the Scottish sun (when it shows up!).

2. What to Wear for Your Family Photos

The question I get asked the most! Here’s what works beautifully on camera:

Coordinate, don’t match – Pick a colour palette (like neutrals + soft blues or blush tones) and dress everyone within that. Avoid everyone wearing the exact same colour.

Avoid logos & busy patterns – They can date your photos and distract from the star attraction: you lot.

Comfort is key – Make sure you can sit, cuddle, and run about if needed. If someone feels awkward in their outfit, it’ll show.

Think timeless – Classic styles will help your images stay fresh for years to come.

Want more variety? Bring a second outfit if you’d like a quick change mid-session. I’m all for it!

3. Prepping the Kids (and Grown-Ups!)

Here’s the deal: I don’t expect perfectly behaved children. In fact, the magic often happens when they’re being cheeky!

Some top tips:

  • Avoid saying “say cheese” — it tends to lead to strained smiles.

  • Let them be themselves — if they want to twirl, show off their toy or climb on mum’s lap, that’s the good stuff.

  • I’ll interact with your children in a fun and natural way to help them relax.

Parents, your job is just to enjoy the experience. I’ll do the wrangling, the entertaining, and the photo magic.

4. Location, Location...

Whether we’re in the studio in Auchterarder or out exploring the Perthshire countryside, I’ll help you choose the perfect backdrop.

Local parks, woodlands, or cosy home sessions — all have their charm. And if the Scottish weather throws us a curveball? Don’t worry, I always have a Plan B!

5. During the Session

Expect laughter, movement, and maybe a few silly faces. This isn’t about stiff posing — it’s about telling your family’s story. I’ll gently guide you with prompts and ideas, but I promise nothing forced or awkward.

You might be surprised how much fun it is!

6. After the Shoot

You’ll receive a beautiful online gallery filled with professionally edited images — ready to download, print, and share with your favourite people. Whether you’re planning a statement piece for the wall, a keepsake album, or just want to treasure those everyday smiles, these are memories made to last.
