An Open Letter to the Mum Who Won’t Get in the Photo

An Open Letter to the Mum Who Won’t Get in the Photo

Categories

Dear Mum,

The one holding the phone.
The one wiping noses.
The one fixing collars and smoothing hair.
The one saying, “Oh no, I’m fine. Just get one of the kids.”

This is for you.

I know why you do it.

You’re tired.
You don’t feel “camera ready.”
You haven’t had your hair done in a while.
Your body feels different.
You think you’ll wait until you feel more like yourself.

But here’s the thing.

Your children don’t see any of that.

They see the safest place they know.
They see the arms that hold them.
The lap they climb onto.
The face that lights up when they walk into a room.

They don’t care about the baby weight.
They don’t notice the tired eyes.
They won’t remember what size jeans you were wearing.

They will remember that you were there.

And one day, they will look for photographs that prove it.

Why Mums Don’t Like Being in Photos

“But I Don’t Feel Photogenic…”

Let me tell you something gently but honestly.

Almost every mum says this to me.

And almost every mum is wrong.

You don’t need to be photogenic.
You need to feel comfortable.

That’s my job.

When you come to a session with me, I don’t just plonk you down and hope for the best.

I position you first.

I guide your angles.
I watch your posture.
I adjust hands and shoulders subtly.
I make sure the light is flattering before I even lift the camera.

You’ll never be left wondering what to do.

And I promise you this — I am always thinking about how to photograph you in a way that feels like your best self, whether that’s in my studio in Auchterarder or somewhere special like Gleneagles.

Not posed stiffly.
Not awkwardly.
Just naturally, gently, beautifully.

Making Family Photos Easy (Even for Reluctant Dads)

Let’s address the other elephant in the room.

Sometimes Dad doesn’t love the idea of a photoshoot.

He’s not dreaming about it.
He’s not browsing Pinterest boards.
He might even be there under mild protest.

That’s fine.

I don’t drag sessions out for hours.
I don’t overcomplicate it.
And I definitely don’t make anyone perform.

We keep it relaxed.
We keep it efficient.
We get what we need.

Most dads leave saying,
“That wasn’t actually that bad.”

Some even admit they enjoyed it.

(But we won’t tell them I said that.)

Why Waiting for the “Right Time” Doesn’t Work

You think you’ll book when:

  • You lose a bit of weight

  • You’ve had more sleep

  • The baby is older

  • Life feels calmer

But life doesn’t really get calmer.

It just moves.

And the longer you wait, the more you disappear from the frame.

Your children don’t need perfect.

They need proof that you were part of their everyday.

A Meaningful Mother’s Day Gift Idea

If you’re reading this and thinking,
“Maybe I should just do it…”

This is your nudge.

A photography voucher is not about a “photoshoot.”

It’s about:

Being present.
Being remembered.
Being seen.

And I promise, I’ll take care of the flattering angles, the wriggly toddlers and the slightly reluctant dads.

You just have to turn up.

With love,
Jenny xXx
