Your Newborn Photography Session: What to Expect (and How to Prepare)
First things first—congratulations! Whether you’re knee-deep in nappies or still in the sleepy newborn bubble, I’m so excited you’ve chosen to capture this precious moment. Your baby will change so much, so quickly—and a newborn session freezes those teeny toes and squishy cheeks in time.
Here’s how to get ready, relax, and make the most of your newborn photo shoot at JB Moments Photography.
When to Schedule Your Newborn Session
Newborn sessions are best held within the first 5–14 days after birth. Babies are sleepiest and still love being curled up, which makes posing much easier and safer.
But don’t worry—if your little one is already a few weeks old, we can still create beautiful images that reflect their growing personality.
How Long Will It Take?
Plan for up to 2 hours. This allows plenty of time for feeding, settling, and cuddling. There’s no rush—we go entirely at baby’s pace.
I keep the studio warm and cosy to help baby feel calm and sleepy (parents often joke it’s the best nap they’ve had since baby arrived!).
What To Bring
Here’s your checklist:
Plenty of nappies, milk/formula, and wipes
A dummy/pacifier if your baby uses one
A spare top for you (accidents happen!)
Any special items like blankets, teddies, or heirlooms you’d like in the photos
Snacks and drinks for you—you deserve them!
I provide all the wraps, blankets, hats, headbands, and props we’ll use during the session.
A note on dummies: Even if your baby doesn’t usually use a dummy—or you’re keen to avoid it becoming a habit—having one just for the session can really help soothe and settle them between poses. It’s a simple trick that often makes all the difference in capturing those sleepy, snuggly shots.
Don’t worry if you forget—I’ve got a stash of sterilised, single-use ones in the studio just in case!

What Should I Wear?
Keep it simple and timeless:
Neutral colours (like whites, greys, creams, pastels) photograph beautifully
Avoid bold logos or busy patterns
Comfort is key—especially for post-birth bodies
Partners and siblings are welcome to join. For siblings, bring a favourite toy or snack to keep them happy between photos.
What If My Baby Doesn't Sleep?
No stress! Awake babies can still be beautifully photographed—those wide-eyed stares are magical too. I’m experienced in newborn safety and soothing, so I’ll gently guide the session whether baby is sleepy, wriggly, or a little fussy.

Final Thought
These first days are a blur of love, exhaustion, and wonder. Your session is more than a photoshoot—it’s a chance to pause and soak in your baby’s earliest moments. You’ll never regret having these memories captured.
