Studio Session – Max’s Smash and Splash

Studio Session – Max’s Smash and Splash

Master Max first came to see me as a newborn. His mum and dad then purchased a Grow with Me package so I could capture him every 4 months of his first year. He absolutely rocked his 4-month session. His 8-month session unfortunately came and went during lockdown 🙁

Mum messaged me as lockdown was ending to say that Max was nearly a year. We agreed to do his 1-year Smash and Splash session and do another session at 16 months old. Instead of a 1st year Photobook, Max will get a year and a half book 🙂

But first, the smart shots

Before we let Max get into his cake smash I wanted to get some ‘clean’ images in his little outfit.

Cake Smash and Tub Splash Photography by JB Moments Photography

Max had the cutest dungaree set on with a cool shirt and braces. And would you just look at those knee socks – gorgeous!

Mum had asked for an animal set up. I kinda pushed this to the limit and went with dinosaurs (because I saw some cute dinos when I was getting his cake). Luckily Mum and Dad said he loves dinosaurs 🙂

Cake Smash Time

After Max lost the smart shirt and socks it was time to introduce him to his cake.

Cake Smash and Tub Splash Photography by JB Moments Photography

He wasn’t sure at first, preferring to play with the balloons. But eventually, he started to get into it.

Cake Smash and Tub Splash Photography by JB Moments Photography

He started smashing with the wooden spoon I provide but soon found that he could cram much more into his mouth with his hands!

Max was really getting into the swing of things and thoroughly enjoying himself. This, in turn, was delighting Mum and Dad.

Cake Smash and Tub Splash Photography by JB Moments Photography

This is one of the reasons why I love doing Smash and Splash sessions, so much fun and laughter in the studio. It’s infectious!

Atta boy Max! You nailed the Smash part. Now you could do with a good clean up!

Splish Splash I was Taking a Bath

Max loves bath time so I knew he was going to love a splash in my tub.

Cake Smash and Tub Splash Photography by JB Moments Photography

Plenty of bubbles, rubber ducks and warm water. How could he not be happy?

Cake Smash and Tub Splash Photography by JB Moments Photography

Even when I got Mum to add a bubble beard and mohawk he was still making his gorgeous eyes at me!

Yup Max had a great time, almost as much fun as I had. And the best bit – I get to see him again in a few months 😀

In other news

Alex, one of my former Grow with Me clients came in for his postponed Easter Mini Session. We turned it into a summer session and I got to use my homemade clouds again! At the end of the session, I got to play with my newest prop – a vintage step ladder that my sister-in-law managed to source for me.

I just love this image of Alex sitting above the clouds!

Studio Session – Baby Lachlan

Baby Photography

Baby, it’s weird outside

Before the UK closed down completely due to the COVID-19 virus my last wonderful client for the foreseeable braved their session.

I met the family at the door with a bottle of hand sanitiser instead of hugs and handshakes. They were welcomed into my studio that has never had so much Dettol sprayed in it. I found it really hard not to touch them as I posed them and when I did the hand sanitiser got squirted liberally again (and again).

The session was for baby Lachlan  (pronounced Lock Lan) a handsome dude at just under a month new who didn’t want to sleep at all! Under normal circumstances, I would spend more time rocking and shushing him. But I was observing as minimal touch as possible. Gah! It killed me not to be able to sniff and kiss his little head when no one was looking. But his safety was more important than my baby fix!

What the heck are you doing?

Baby Boy - JB Moments Photography

I love, love, love this image! Lachlan was so intent on watching everything I was doing he went cross-eyed with concentration. Look at that fluffy hair and little pixie ears. Absolutely delicious!

Bear with me

Baby Boy - JB Moments Photography

Lachlan’s mummy and daddy bought his favourite teddy that he had been gifted. I included it in quite a few of his images and it looked great in this setup. As you can see this baby was wide awake and keen to see everything that was going on. He was pretty chilled out just hanging in the bucket!

Some bunny loves you

Who knows what the situation will be like at Easter. So I had to get my fix with this baby. I’m not ashamed to admit I broke out the bunny bonnet!

Baby Boy - JB Moments Photography

I’m not sure how Lachlan felt about it. I think he looked pretty stinking cute!

Mugshots

I am still enjoying baby mugshots and Lachlan being super awake made it easy. The hardest part was narrowing down the hundreds I took into his gallery.

Baby Boy - JB Moments Photography

Being a model is so exhausting

Guess what? Right at the end of the session as I was getting the family images, Lachlan finally decided to crash out!

Baby Boy - JB Moments Photography

Such a gorgeous family.

Closed…for now

It’s funny to think that when Lachlan looks back at his baby photos all he will see is a beautiful moment in time. He will comment on how young his mum and dad look and laugh at how cute he is. He will see love and joy in his images. He won’t remember the crazy, unprecedented times that came directly after his studio session. We may be on lockdown right now but we will get through this. I am using this time constructively to clear out my prop cupboards in the studio and taking the opportunity to do on-line training. I am also reviewing my website, customer literature and workflows. So once the world gets healthy again JB Moments Photography will be back better than ever and ready to capture your moments in a way that will make you smile.

Studio Session – Baby Oliver

Baby Photography

A baby boy may leave smudges in your house and also on your heart.

Oh Baby

Oh boy! Baby Oliver came into my studio at 11 days new and totally rocked his newborn photoshoot.

Mum had bought with her the pram shawl that her gran had knitted when she was a baby. We absolutely had to use that. I love it when clients bring in something personal to them. It makes the final images that much more personal and unique to them.

Baby Boy - JB Moments Photography

As you can see Master Oliver is super chill about it all.

Baby Bear

Oliver wasn’t much for sleeping (apart from when we wanted him awake – typical boy!). But when I put him in my beanbag that is designed specifically for posing babies for composite photographs, he got comfy. He did have a little power nap.

Baby Boy - JB Moments Photography
I am beary tired.

I chose the image where he is having the cutest little yawn to use in the final composite. I’m in love with how it turned out.

Wide Awake Club

Even when Oliver was awake, he was quite happy to look about with his big beautiful eyes. As long as he got his milk on tap whenever it was required!

Baby Boy - JB Moments Photography

He was perfectly content laying in this pose just surveying his surroundings. I absolutely adore his hair. He also had the longest eyelashes 🙂

Heart and Sole

Talking of things that make me go all gooey inside. I simply cannot resist pictures of baby feet. It’s not like I have a foot fetish per se. I can take or leave adult feet (unless they are in heels on a boudoir shoot – okay maybe I am more into feet than I first thought!). But newborn feet, toes, the soles of their feet with their flakey skin that disappears so quickly. Well, it’s like crack for me!

Baby Boy - JB Moments Photography

Oliver’s feet lovingly cradled in mum’s hand were no exception. Surely it’s not just me; they are delicious, right?

Don’t Mug Me Off

I introduced baby Mugshots in Miss Harley’s blog, and Master Oliver did a great job as well.

Baby Boy - JB Moments Photography

Don’t you think he looks like he is squaring up for a fight here? I think this would look amazing as a large canvas on a wall.

As always the time I had with Oliver seemed to be over in a flash, and off he went in his hot air balloon.

Baby Boy - JB Moments Photography

Well, not really, off he went in his car seat with mum and dad. But wouldn’t it be cool if he had!

Studio Sessions – Birthday Smashing & Splashing

Smash & Splash

Every birthday counts…especially the first one!

Miss Amber – the birthday girl

Amber’s mum got in touch for a studio session for Amber to celebrate her first birthday milestone. It always makes my heart sing when clients return again and again. Miss Amber is no exception. I’ve been lucky enough to see this lovely a few times now.

In my pre-shoot questionnaire, I always ask if there are any particular themes or colours and mum asked for a pastel theme. I had just the thing!

First birthday images by JB Moments Photography

I always like to start without the cake (or whatever the birthday girl/boy is smashing) so I can get some ‘clean’ shots for the parents and grandparents to commemorate the milestone.

Did somebody say Cake?

Then comes the fun starts! I like to introduce the food that is being smashed with a wooden spoon as some children like to bash the food with a spoon and others (see Alex later) prefer a more hands-on approach!

First birthday images by JB Moments Photography
Mmmmmm cake!

Miss Amber choose to start with the spoon but then found her hands much more effective.

First birthday images by JB Moments Photography

Maximum mess, this girl definitely got the memo 🙂

First birthday images by JB Moments Photography
I’m having a smashing time!

Bubbly good fun

I introduced the ‘Splash’ element last year for two reasons: 1. the bubble bath, tin bath and rubber ducks add another look for the client’s overall gallery and; 2. it helps clean up the little person!

First birthday images by JB Moments Photography

Miss Amber loved the bubble machine. She also enjoyed getting in and out of the bath and I got some super cute images of her little bottom that are too cheeky (see what I did there!) to share here. Mum asked for those images in black and white so she can create a gorgeous image for her bathroom. Love that idea!

Happy birthday beautiful x

Master Alex – the birthday boy

Talking of returning clients. I have loved seeing Master Alex every 4 months or so to document his first year. His Granny took my “Grow with Me” package after his newborn session. This culminated in his first birthday smash and splash.

First birthday images by JB Moments Photography

A very hands-on approach

When Master Alex was introduced to the cake and spoon he took one look at the spoon and dismissed it immediately. He went straight in for a huge handful!

And straight after….another!

I think he liked it!

Tub Time

Master Alex had managed to get hundreds and thousands everywhere, including up his nose! So it was time for his clean up.

Which he thoroughly enjoyed.

Studio Session – Baby Sebastian

Family Photography

First we had each other then we had you now we have everything.

Family Photography by JB Moments Photography

First baby of 2020

Baby Sebastian was 19 days new when he came into the studio on the 2nd day of 2020 and completely stole my heart.

Years ago I worked with his mum’s bestie (if by work you mean meeting for copious cups of tea and bitching about the place we worked at – then we worked hard!). She got in touch to buy a newborn photoshoot as a baby gift. That’s the perfect BFF right there!

Wide awake club

I’d established with mum that Sebastian was most sleepy in the afternoon so that’s when we booked the session. However, as I always tell parents their baby will always choose the day of their photoshoot to change their routine. Sebastian was no exception! But that’s okay because I get beautiful wide awake images for their gallery as well as sleepy ones. Plus it means I get more time snuggling with the baby as I attempt to get them to nod off. Win-win!

Baby Boy - JB Moments Photography
Nope, counting sheep isn’t going to send me to sleep!

What the heck are you doing to me?

I thought with one of the backdrops I was using my mohair teddy bonnet would look super cute on Sebastian.

Baby Boy - JB Moments Photography

And it did, but I also love his angry expression in this image. It’s like he is totally mad at me for daring to put him in the hat!

Being a model is exhausting

Eventually being fed and swaddled started to work its magic.

Baby Boy - JB Moments Photography
I’m so tired of being admired.

Master Sebastian decided my bucket prop was the perfect place to take a little power nap.

Baby Boy - JB Moments Photography

Look at those pouty lips and perfectly kissable cheeks. Baby perfection right there!

Family is a beautiful word

I always ask mum and dad at the beginning of the session if they want pictures of them with their new bundle of joy. A lot of parents are self-conscious and not sure if they want to be in front of the camera. Being parents is all-new, as is not getting much sleep. Sebastian’s parents were no exception. I always say the same thing. These images are not for you, they are for your baby when they get old enough to understand – you want them to see how loved they were as soon as they were born. I ease them into it with a silhouette image like the one at the beginning of this blog and then if they want to stop there it’s fine. But I’m delighted that Sebastian’s parents then choose to have images taken with him individually and together as a family unit. I think Sebastian is going to adore these images when he is older and be in absolutely no doubt about how utterly loved he is.

Studio Session – Baby Callum

Baby Photography

GRRRRRRRRR!

It is not like me to start a baby post with an angry rant, but please bear with me. Mums, especially brand new mums are made to feel guilty about everything. Are they breastfeeding? Is the baby eating enough, sleeping enough, going to the toilet enough? Have they got them too warm, too cold? Are they stimulated enough, too much? it goes on and on. What they absolutely do not need is baby photographers telling them their new bundle of joy is too old for newborn photos!!!

Guilt-free zone

Imagine being made to feel like you’d ‘missed’ an important milestone in your new babies life because you didn’t get them photographed as soon as you come out of hospital? I know that newborn babies can be easier to photograph in their first two weeks of life and as professional photographers we all love that. But, if mum has had a difficult labour or has lots of stitches she may not be ready to leave the house right away. Add to that being parents for the first time doesn’t come with an instruction manual. That first couple of weeks whizz by.

So when Callum’s mum came to me asking for newborn shoots for her baby who was 3 weeks old, after being told he was too old. I was more than happy to help. Because making sure my clients get a great experience and memories to treasure is the most important thing. ***Climbs off soapbox – rant over***.

Meet baby perfection

Introducing Master Callum.

Baby Boy - JB Moments Photography

Look at all that hair! Those pouty lips. Kissable cheeks. Button nose and eyelashes. Utter perfection! Mum and Dad had waited a very long time for this little dude to come into their lives. He was absolutely worth the wait and you could see they were utterly besotted with him. As was Gran who came along to watch this first milestone as well.

Look into my eyes

Callum was a very good boy sleeping between feeds. But he also treated us to some time awake. I love capturing your baby both awake and asleep. Callum’s facial expressions were hilarious and I had great fun capturing as many of them as possible.

Baby Boy - JB Moments Photography
Who are you and why are you pointing that camera at me?

Just hanging around

To be fair, he was pulling the cutest faces when he was sleeping as well.

Baby Boy - JB Moments Photography

He looks very pleased with himself in this one!

Christmas cheer

With his photography shoot being right at the end of November I had to introduce a little Christmas magic into Callum’s session.

Baby Boy - JB Moments Photography

Luckily he had fallen into a deep sleep so he couldn’t object to me turning him into the cutest little elf you ever did see!

Baby Boy - JB Moments Photography

Have your ELF a Merry Christmas Callum (sorry, not sorry!).

Studio Session – Harrison’s Smash & Splash

Smash & Splash

Cool Uncle Alert!

Harrison was gifted a Smash & Splash photoshoot voucher by his uncle for his birthday.  His mum and dad told me that Harrison already had loads of toys and they wanted an experience for him and memories for them. So his cool uncle purchased a voucher from me and last weekend Harrison came in to redeem it.

A Smash & Splash session is usually booked to celebrate a first birthday. We begin with some shots of the birthday boy or girl. Then we bring in the item they have chosen to smash (could be cake, doughnuts, fruit, etc). Finally, they wash it all off with a splash in the tub!

Meet the birthday boy

Child portraits by JB Moments Photography

Harrison looked very handsome in his trews and braces and knew how to work the camera from the moment he arrived.

Unfortunately, that outfit wasn’t going to stay pristine for very long.

Bring out the cake

Harrison’s mum had chosen a cake for the smash part of the Smash & Splash and I went for a cookie and cream themed decorated cake to go with the navy and baby blue colour scheme mum had asked for.

Child portraits by JB Moments Photography

Harrison wasn’t sure at first (although dad did confirm it was indeed delicious). But he liked the wooden spoon I gave him to smash the cake with and set about giving the cake a good beating!

Child portraits by JB Moments Photography

As he was a total pro he did remember to look up from his smashing from time to time to allow me to capture his gorgeous cheeky face. Here he is giving me his ‘Blue Steel’ face (Zoolander film reference for those of you too young)!

Tub time

Once Harrison was over the cake smashing I changed the set over to the splash part of his Smash & Splash. The tub is filled with lashing of organic bubble bath, the rubber ducks come out to play and the bubble machine is set to maximum!

Child portraits by JB Moments Photography

I think this was Harrison’s favourite part of the session and this was my favourite picture of him.

I think Harrison and his parents had a great time and I captured some great memories for them. So if you are a cool auntie or uncle. Or even grandparent or friend and want to give a gift of memories check out my gift vouchers 🙂

Studio Session – 8 month old Alex

Grow with Me

Last Friday morning I was in for a treat when my favourite little flirt came back into the studio for the 3rd session of his year-long Grow with Me package. You may remember Alex from his 4-month-old session. Batting his long lashes and looking at me with those big blue eyes I was putty in his hands!

What a Difference?

I make a point at each Grow with Me session to use the same prop that I used at their newborn session as I find it really helps show how much they grow and change in the first year. Boy oh boy has Alex changed. He looked so tiny as a newborn in my dark brown wicker basket and this time he only just squeezed into it!

Grow with Me studio session by JB Moments Photography

Sitting down on the job

At 8 months Alex is sitting up by himself. He is bubbly and happy and as long as he can see where mum is at all times he is confident in front of the camera.

Grow with Me studio session by JB Moments Photography

Look at that face and those oh so kissable cheeks! I was totally in love with his romper suit that was covered in woodland animals. I’ve checked and they don’t sell them in adult sizes 🙁

A sitting child means I have lots more options to vary the setup and I got to use one of my favourite props, the wooden stool my dad made for me.

Grow with Me studio session by JB Moments Photography

Mum was literally just off to the right in case Alex had a wobble but he totally nailed it. What a pro!

Big chair, little person

I like to play with scale as well at these sessions. By putting Alex in a big chair he looks tiny.

Grow with Me studio session by JB Moments Photography

Good for the parents when they worry about how fast time is flying and how big they are getting!

As ever my time with adorable Alex was over too quickly. I can’t wait for his first birthday smash and splash session!

Studio Sessions – Baby Boys

A Tale of Two Baby Boys

Last week I was lucky enough to have not one but two teeny tiny baby boys in the studio. First up was baby Max on the Monday and then later in the week baby Joey came to visit with his big brother and big sister.

Miracle Max

Max couldn’t wait to meet his mum and dad so he arrived a full month early! He came into the studio at six weeks new (two weeks adjusted).

Baby Boy - JB Moments Photography

He had the most amazing big blue eyes that he kept pinned on me at the beginning of the session. I had to include this image as he looks thoroughly pee’d off with me here!

It’s a Wrap

He loved being swaddled though, and soon fell into a nice deep slumber allowing me to capture all sorts of beautiful images for his doting mum and dad.

Baby boy - JB Moments Photography

We’re a Family

Not only was Max eager to meet his parents, they were very eager to meet him. He was the wonderful result of two long, hard years of IVF. To say they were besotted was an understatement. It was absolutely beautiful to see.

Baby with mum and dad - JB Moments Photography
The moment you transition from being in love to being a family.

Fly me to the Moon

I never like to promise I’ll be able to create a composite image as it depends on all sorts of factors on the day. But mum and dad has seen one of my moon composites and really wanted one, especially as Max’s nursery is decorated with a moon and stars theme. I was determined to succeed for them, especially as I had a new moon composite that I was itching to try. I think it worked out pretty darn good 🙂

Baby on the moon - JB Moments Photography
“On the night you were born, the moon smiled with such wonder, that the stars peeked in to see you, and the night wind whispered, life will never be the same again.”

I’m the Little Brother

Next into the studio was 11 day new baby Joey. His family travelled over an hour to get to my studio after a recommendation from someone who’d had a Christmas Mini session with me. No pressure then!

Joey brought with him his big brother Roman (nearly 4) and big sister Millie (9). Mum and dad really wanted some nice images of all the kids together. Normally I like to wait until the baby is fast asleep when dealing with young sibling like Roman but Joey was having none of it. I don’t think he slept the entire session. I needn’t have worried though as Roman and Millie were two of the best behaved older siblings I’ve ever met. They let me pose them with Joey in a whole variety of different ways. They were so careful with him.

“Be nice to your siblings, they’re your best link to your past and most likely to stay with you in the future.” – Baz Luhrmann

Of course, it also helped that they were both very photogenic 🙂

Just Chillin’

Although Joey wasn’t for sleeping he was quite chilled out. He was just looking about, taking in all that was going on.

Baby Boy - JB Moments Photography

I’d love to know what the little dude is thinking about in this image.

Rolling with it

In every newborn session I try to offer at least one prop set up. I actually found this vintage trolly cart at the Gardening Scotland show and have been dying to use it ever since. I would never normally use with a baby that wasn’t in a deep sleep. But Joey was so chill and I had mum spotting close by that we rolled with it (see what I did there!).

Baby boy - JB Moments Photography

I thoroughly enjoyed my week of baby boys but I’m wondering where all the girls are hiding? Desperate to break out the headbands!

Studio Session – 4 month old Alex

Grow With Me

“Time flies, but not memories.” – Ika Natassa

The first year of a babies life they change so much. It’s important to commit all those little details and changes to memory. One way to do that is with a Grow with Me photography package to capture your baby professionally in a studio at the key milestones of their first year.

That’s exactly what Mum Martina and Granny Diane chose to do after getting Alex photographed in my studio at two weeks new. When he came in  at 4 months old I couldn’t believe how much he’d changed already!

Here he is at two weeks old.Grow with Me studio session by JB Moments Photography

Isn’t he just delicious?

And here he is on a similar fluffy background at four months old.

Grow with Me studio session by JB Moments Photography

Still doing the ‘Superman’ pose but look how much he’s grown!!

At four months old babies know their parents and other significant people in their life. Alex was so smiley and happy especially when mum or granny were talking to him. His whole face seemed to like up. And don’t even get me started on those scrummy cheeks!

Heads up

Another big milestone at around the four months mark is being able to lift their own heads unsupported. I always advise parents to book their four months session in the studio when they start doing this.

It has to be said a lot of four month olds don’t particularly like being on their tummy and if that is the case I usually save those shots until the end of the session. Alex started to roll himself over quite near the beginning of the session so I took the chance and positioned him on his belly.

Grow with Me studio session by JB Moments Photography

And the little champ rewarded me with gorgeous poses like this one. 🙂

Getting too big for your basket

When I’m shooting each Grow with Me session I am not just thinking about the images as standalone sessions but how they might work alongside the other 3/4  sessions that make up the full series. Especially in the Photo Book at the end of their first year.

With that in mind I like to shoot the same prop in each of the sessions to show how much the baby has grown each time.

When Alex came into the studio as a newborn I decided to use a dark brown basket stuffed with fluffy wool layers.

Be still my heart!

What a difference four months makes…

Grow with Me studio session by JB Moments Photography

What a little star!

There’s an elephant in the room

Alex was such a professional superstar we got through all the ‘sets’ I had planned in record time. As he was still smiling and laughing I decided to pull out Nelly. I’m so glad I did…

Grow with Me studio session by JB Moments Photography

Then it was time to, reluctantly, give Alex back to his mum and let him get on with his day.

I’m already dreaming about when he next comes in to the studio and makes those beautiful eyes at me 🙂
