Studio Session – Adam’s Cake Smash (with added Pug)

Studio Session – Adam’s Cake Smash (with added Pug)

I said it was a week of Cake Smashes in my last blog and I wasn’t kidding! This time with added pug (well two added pugs actually)!

Is There Anything More Dapper Than A Bowtie?

Before the cake comes out I usually try to get some smart portraits for mum and dad to mark the milestone of their baby turning one. Before the carnage starts!

Fun child photography by JB Moments Photography

Master Adam was no exception with his super-smart bowtie and braces. So what is more dapper than a bowtie?

Fun child and pet photography by JB Moments Photography

When your pug brothers also put their bowties on and join in!!! Meet Hector (fawn and black) and Hugo (black). Almost giving Adam a run for his money in the cuteness stakes.

I love it when parents ask for something a little different. When Adam’s mum asked if their two pugs could be in some of the pictures I couldn’t say YES quick enough. I love all dogs but I have a particular fondness for the squishy-faced breeds. Pugs are just the natural comics of the doggy world and these two were no exception. These three dudes were so cute together.

Cake Smash Time

With Hector and Hugo off for a walk, it was time for the main event. The cake!

Fun child photography by JB Moments Photography

Adam was such a happy wee guy and with mum’s help thought that cake smashing was hysterical.

Fun child photography by JB Moments Photography

He was giggling and chortling his whole way through the smash.

Fun child photography by JB Moments Photography

I love this image, he is holding some of his cake up triumphantly! Meanwhile, the clean-up crew has arrived slightly prematurely eager to help! And just look at that toothy grin. Priceless!

Bubble Time

After all that cake, the only place any self-respecting birthday dude could go is the bathtub!

Fun child photography by JB Moments Photography

Adam was having the best time as you can see. He settled into the tin tub, stuck his feet out, and got ready for some bubble fun!

Fun child photography by JB Moments Photography

Mum did a brilliant job operating the bubble machine. Just look at the pure joy on that face.

Sessions like this mean so much to me. They are all about creating memories. Mum, Dad, Hector, Hugo, and most especially Adam all had a great time. Every time they look through the Photo Book they ordered with the shoot they will be reminded of how much fun it was.

Meanwhile, my run of working with children and animals continues as in a couple of blogs time you will see how a 12-day new baby girl bought her big bulldog brother with her to her first photoshoot!

Studio Session – Gregor’s Cake Smash

Studio Session – Gregor’s Cake Smash

I can’t believe this session took place over two weeks ago in my studio and I’m only now just getting the chance to blog about it! Trust me, after 5 months not being able to do anything but twiddle my thumbs I am delighted to have the problem of being too busy shooting to write! But the world needs to see this cuteness 🙂

Cutest Mummy Ever

I first met Master Gregor at my Halloween Mini Sessions last year. It was his first Halloween and he was dressed up as a mummy. From the moment I saw his huge blue eyes and kissable cheeks I knew I was a gonner. A fully paid-up member of his fan club. Then he came back for a Christmas mini in a matching Xmas jumper with mum and dad and…be still my heart!

You can imagine how over the moon I was therefore when his mum got in touch during lockdown to book a Cake Smash n Splash for his first birthday. Not only would I get my cuteness fix again but during the bleak lockdown months to know people still wanted to book my services made my heart sing.

A Wee Bit Late

Okay, okay, by the time lockdown actually finished I’d missed Gregor’s birthday by about 2 months but what’s a few months between friends?

Fun child photography by JB Moments Photography

We made sure to capture all the hats and outfits that Gregor had for his birthday.

Fun child photography by JB Moments Photography

Before he could rip them off!

Cake Time

After a couple of outfit changes including some birthday PJ’s it was finally time to get down to his onesie and the serious business of cake smashing!

Fun child photography by JB Moments Photography

Gosh just look at those eyelashes, should be illegal!

At first Master Gregor was quite bemused by the cake and what to do with it. After a few delicate pickings and tastings, he got into the swing of things.Fun child photography by JB Moments Photography

With the help of the wooden spoon, his hand, and his feet Gregor soon started to make short work of the cake.

Cake Smash or Set Smash?

Fun child photography by JB Moments Photography

In fact, Gregor got so into the smashing he included the set as well. Totally worth cleaning hundreds and thousands out of wooden crates (they get everywhere!) when you get smiles like this. Have I mentioned how cute this little dude is?

Rubber Ducky

It was certainly a good way to put the new ‘wipe clean’ vinyl backdrop I had invested in during lockdown through its paces. It wiped spotless by the way for all those Mrs Hinches among you! It was also the first outing for the new tub backdrop I’d also invested in. After a few teething problems, getting it to stay up (now fixed with a cunning solution – thanks Mr JB) I was rather pleased with the effect.

Fun child photography by JB Moments Photography

Master Gregor also stopped eating the little rubber ducks long enough for me to capture the adorable bubble beard his mum has fashioned for him.

I’m not sure who enjoys these sessions more. The Parents? The kids? Or Me? Spoiler alert, it’s always me!

If my first week back was all Grow with Me sessions. My second was all about the Cake Smash so watch out for more blogs – including one with pugs!!

Studio Session – Max’s Smash and Splash

Studio Session – Max’s Smash and Splash

Master Max first came to see me as a newborn. His mum and dad then purchased a Grow with Me package so I could capture him every 4 months of his first year. He absolutely rocked his 4-month session. His 8-month session unfortunately came and went during lockdown 🙁

Mum messaged me as lockdown was ending to say that Max was nearly a year. We agreed to do his 1-year Smash and Splash session and do another session at 16 months old. Instead of a 1st year Photobook, Max will get a year and a half book 🙂

But first, the smart shots

Before we let Max get into his cake smash I wanted to get some ‘clean’ images in his little outfit.

Cake Smash and Tub Splash Photography by JB Moments Photography

Max had the cutest dungaree set on with a cool shirt and braces. And would you just look at those knee socks – gorgeous!

Mum had asked for an animal set up. I kinda pushed this to the limit and went with dinosaurs (because I saw some cute dinos when I was getting his cake). Luckily Mum and Dad said he loves dinosaurs 🙂

Cake Smash Time

After Max lost the smart shirt and socks it was time to introduce him to his cake.

Cake Smash and Tub Splash Photography by JB Moments Photography

He wasn’t sure at first, preferring to play with the balloons. But eventually, he started to get into it.

Cake Smash and Tub Splash Photography by JB Moments Photography

He started smashing with the wooden spoon I provide but soon found that he could cram much more into his mouth with his hands!

Max was really getting into the swing of things and thoroughly enjoying himself. This, in turn, was delighting Mum and Dad.

Cake Smash and Tub Splash Photography by JB Moments Photography

This is one of the reasons why I love doing Smash and Splash sessions, so much fun and laughter in the studio. It’s infectious!

Cake Smash and Tub Splash Photography by JB Moments Photography

Atta boy Max! You nailed the Smash part. Now you could do with a good clean up!

Splish Splash I was Taking a Bath

Max loves bath time so I knew he was going to love a splash in my tub.

Cake Smash and Tub Splash Photography by JB Moments Photography

Plenty of bubbles, rubber ducks and warm water. How could he not be happy?

Cake Smash and Tub Splash Photography by JB Moments Photography

Even when I got Mum to add a bubble beard and mohawk he was still making his gorgeous eyes at me!

Cake Smash and Tub Splash Photography by JB Moments Photography

Yup Max had a great time, almost as much fun as I had. And the best bit – I get to see him again in a few months 😀

In other news

Alex, one of my former Grow with Me clients came in for his postponed Easter Mini Session. We turned it into a summer session and I got to use my homemade clouds again! At the end of the session, I got to play with my newest prop – a vintage step ladder that my sister-in-law managed to source for me.

I just love this image of Alex sitting above the clouds!

Studio Sessions – Birthday Smashing & Splashing

Smash & Splash

Every birthday counts…especially the first one!

Miss Amber – the birthday girl

Amber’s mum got in touch for a studio session for Amber to celebrate her first birthday milestone. It always makes my heart sing when clients return again and again. Miss Amber is no exception. I’ve been lucky enough to see this lovely a few times now.

In my pre-shoot questionnaire, I always ask if there are any particular themes or colours and mum asked for a pastel theme. I had just the thing!

First birthday images by JB Moments Photography

I always like to start without the cake (or whatever the birthday girl/boy is smashing) so I can get some ‘clean’ shots for the parents and grandparents to commemorate the milestone.

Did somebody say Cake?

Then comes the fun starts! I like to introduce the food that is being smashed with a wooden spoon as some children like to bash the food with a spoon and others (see Alex later) prefer a more hands-on approach!

First birthday images by JB Moments Photography
Mmmmmm cake!

Miss Amber choose to start with the spoon but then found her hands much more effective.

First birthday images by JB Moments Photography

Maximum mess, this girl definitely got the memo 🙂

First birthday images by JB Moments Photography
I’m having a smashing time!

Bubbly good fun

I introduced the ‘Splash’ element last year for two reasons: 1. the bubble bath, tin bath and rubber ducks add another look for the client’s overall gallery and; 2. it helps clean up the little person!

First birthday images by JB Moments Photography

Miss Amber loved the bubble machine. She also enjoyed getting in and out of the bath and I got some super cute images of her little bottom that are too cheeky (see what I did there!) to share here. Mum asked for those images in black and white so she can create a gorgeous image for her bathroom. Love that idea!

Happy birthday beautiful x

Master Alex – the birthday boy

Talking of returning clients. I have loved seeing Master Alex every 4 months or so to document his first year. His Granny took my “Grow with Me” package after his newborn session. This culminated in his first birthday smash and splash.

First birthday images by JB Moments Photography

A very hands-on approach

When Master Alex was introduced to the cake and spoon he took one look at the spoon and dismissed it immediately. He went straight in for a huge handful!

First birthday images by JB Moments Photography

And straight after….another!

First birthday images by JB Moments Photography

I think he liked it!

Tub Time

Master Alex had managed to get hundreds and thousands everywhere, including up his nose! So it was time for his clean up.

Which he thoroughly enjoyed.

Studio Session – Harrison’s Smash & Splash

Smash & Splash

Cool Uncle Alert!

Harrison was gifted a Smash & Splash photoshoot voucher by his uncle for his birthday.  His mum and dad told me that Harrison already had loads of toys and they wanted an experience for him and memories for them. So his cool uncle purchased a voucher from me and last weekend Harrison came in to redeem it.

A Smash & Splash session is usually booked to celebrate a first birthday. We begin with some shots of the birthday boy or girl. Then we bring in the item they have chosen to smash (could be cake, doughnuts, fruit, etc). Finally, they wash it all off with a splash in the tub!

Meet the birthday boy

Child portraits by JB Moments Photography

Harrison looked very handsome in his trews and braces and knew how to work the camera from the moment he arrived.

Unfortunately, that outfit wasn’t going to stay pristine for very long.

Bring out the cake

Harrison’s mum had chosen a cake for the smash part of the Smash & Splash and I went for a cookie and cream themed decorated cake to go with the navy and baby blue colour scheme mum had asked for.

Child portraits by JB Moments Photography

Harrison wasn’t sure at first (although dad did confirm it was indeed delicious). But he liked the wooden spoon I gave him to smash the cake with and set about giving the cake a good beating!

Child portraits by JB Moments Photography

As he was a total pro he did remember to look up from his smashing from time to time to allow me to capture his gorgeous cheeky face. Here he is giving me his ‘Blue Steel’ face (Zoolander film reference for those of you too young)!

Tub time

Once Harrison was over the cake smashing I changed the set over to the splash part of his Smash & Splash. The tub is filled with lashing of organic bubble bath, the rubber ducks come out to play and the bubble machine is set to maximum!

Child portraits by JB Moments Photography

I think this was Harrison’s favourite part of the session and this was my favourite picture of him.

I think Harrison and his parents had a great time and I captured some great memories for them. So if you are a cool auntie or uncle. Or even grandparent or friend and want to give a gift of memories check out my gift vouchers 🙂

Studio Sessions – Smash & Splash and 4-Month-Old

Smash & Splash

Cake for Breakfast? – Yes Please!

I first met Hamish and his big sister Amber in November last year when their mum brought them into the studio for a Christmas Mini Session. Fast forward to last week and Hamish came into the studio celebrate his first birthday with a smash and splash. 10 am date with a huge cake? I’m game!

But first, before the mess and chaos. Some ‘nice’ photos with his big sister Amber.

See!

Cake Time

At first, Hamish wasn’t sure about the cake but he sure did love bashing it with the wooden spoon I’d provided.

Eventually, with some help from mum, he got stuck in with his hands and even his feet at one point!

By the end of the smash part, Hamish and the studio were covered in cake!

Splashing Around

Hamish loves taking a bath so when we bought in the tub of soapy water he couldn’t wait to get into it.

Amber did a brilliant job as my bubble assistant! She has a job for life if she wants it 🙂 (I pay in lollipops for those also interested).

Child photography near Falkirk by JB Moments Photography

This is my favourite photo from the whole session. I just love how happy Hamish is.

Amber Again

Once the studio was clean of cake and bubbles it was time for my afternoon session. Another Amber (what are the chances of two in one day?!) this time only 4 months new.

Amber was bright as a button and has the most gorgeous blue eyes. She was absolutely delicious to cuddle and had a really infectious laugh.

Child photography near Falkirk by JB Moments Photography

Mum had bought some cute outfits with her so we could have plenty of costume changes. I was also conscious that mum had missed out on a shoot in the weeks after Amber was born so I wanted to try and get some ‘newborn style’ images as well.

Child photography near Falkirk by JB Moments Photography

I often shoot newborns in what I call the ‘tucked up’ pose and Amber totally nailed this alongside one of her favourite teddies. Just too cute.

All in all a very good day in the studio 🙂

Studio Sessions – Smash and Splash!

Smash & Splash

Some of the most fun I have in the studio is when kids come in to celebrate a milestone birthday with a Smash and Splash. So, imagine my excitement last Thursday when I had not one but two in on the same day! Off the charts excited!

Eat more hole foods

First up, in the morning, was the delicious Amber. This little cutie has been coming to me for mini sessions since she was just 4 and a half months old (cutest pumpkin ever). It’s been an amazing privilege to watch this little one grow up right before my lens.

Child photography near Falkirk by JB Moments Photography

She has the largest big brown eyes, like giant chocolate buttons!

I like to start each session with a few pictures of the birthday boy or girl in their fancy outfit before they start getting messy. Amber had a pretty pinky/peach party dress on.

Glazed over

Ambers parents had opted for a Doughnut Smash (Yasss! my fave!) and Amber wasted no time getting stuck into the glazed rings, chocolate mini rings and mini jam-filled doughnuts.

Child photography near Falkirk by JB Moments Photography

She didn’t so much as smash the doughnuts – more daintily picked at them but she seemed to be enjoying herself. Especially when mummy and daddy sang ‘Baby Shark’ several times!

Child photography near Falkirk by JB Moments Photography

Splish Splash

After the Smash comes the Splash. A tub filled with raspberry scented organic baby bubble bath, rubber ducks and lots and lots of bubbles.

Child photography near Falkirk by JB Moments Photography

This was Amber’s favourite part of the experience. She loved the rubber ducks and the bubble machine. In fact, she was so happy relaxing in the bath she didn’t want to get out. I think she is going to be a bathroom hogger when she gets older!!

Piece of Cake

In the afternoon I had the pleasure of meeting brand new clients who literally live a couple of blocks away from my home studio. They had found me via Nextdoor an online social community for your neighbourhood.

Brothers in Arms

I took some family photos first of all at mum’s request and then some with the birthday boy Avery’s older brother Jayden.

Child photography near Falkirk by JB Moments Photography

In their pink shirts and navy smart shorts, the boys looked so handsome. Jayden is autistic so a session like this was always going to be quite hard for him. He coped admirably even following my request to hug and kiss his little brother. What a superstar!

Costume change

Avery’s mum had opted for a Cake Smash and I’d chosen a white chocolate cake covered in flakes and sprinkles. With a big wooden spoon for Avery to smash it up with.

Child photography near Falkirk by JB Moments Photography

For his smash, Avery was changed into the cutest little blue and white shorts with braces and a bow tie. Topped off with a birthday crown. Be still my heart.

You wanna a piece of me

Child photography near Falkirk by JB Moments Photography

Whilst the cake wasn’t much to his liking, Avery did a grand job smashing it with the spoon and seemed delighted with his efforts. As were we. By this point, I was totally smitten. I didn’t think he could get any cuter…but then…

I’m forever blowing bubbles

Child photography near Falkirk by JB Moments Photography

He got in the tub. What a little dude! He also enjoyed the splashing more than the smashing and the bubbles really tickled him.

Child photography near Falkirk by JB Moments Photography

He was such a little character, I hope I get to work with him again.

Sorry not sorry

You may be thinking at this point, ‘how wasteful – all that food’. Well, let me assure you that any doughnuts and cake that hadn’t been bitten or child handled got eaten by Mr JB and me. And I’m not even embarrassed about it!

Holy Communion, Cute Dogs and Cake Smashes!

Photography Update

Last weekend was very enjoyable and busy for JB Moments Photography.

First Holy Communion

Mum, Kelly reached out to me ages ago about photographing her sons’  first communion. What she said was ‘photos are really important to me’ and as that is music to my ears I was delighted to attend and shoot their first holy communion (and mine).

The boys looked so smart in their matching kilts.

St. Vincents in East Kilbride was packed to the rafters for this special event. Only the parents could fit in the actual chapel so extended family watched on big screens in the side chapel.

The boys celebrated their day with their parents, big sister, grandparents, uncle and close friends that had travelled all the way from Spain for the event. I think they also brought the sunshine with them as it was a glorious Saturday.

It’s a family affair!

Afterwards, it was onto a reception nearby to celebrate in style with all their family and friends.

Call my agent

Sunday morning I had a V.I.P. (very important pooch) in the studio for his photo shoot. Brodie Bear came complete with his designer bowls, bottled water and freshly cooked chicken (courtesy of his vegetarian human!).

But when you look as cute as this little fellow you can get away with it. He was very well behaved and didn’t mind giving me plenty of kisses!

Up, up and away!

I bought these digital backgrounds to use with newborns (that’s what they were designed for) but I have a thing for putting dogs in them so I had to give Brodie Bear the same treatment!

Smash and Splash

Then in the afternoon, it was time to transform the studio into a pink and purple themed party for Kayla’s first birthday cake smash.

I don’t know what possessed me to get the cake with hundreds and thousands all over it…I just thought it would look good with her colour scheme. They went EVERYWHERE! I have a feeling I’m going to be finding them for weeks to come.

This little lady wasn’t into it at first but with the help of some Peppa Pig on mums phone, some enthusiastic singing from gran and some expert bubble blowing from dad we got there in the end! Doesn’t she have the most amazing blue eyes?

New for cake or doughnut smashes going forward is the option of a ‘splash’ session at the end. At the moment I am trialling them but later in the year, they will become a chargeable extra.

Armed with organic bubble bath, a bubble machine and a mutant rubber ducky they are a fun way to get some of the cake of your little one before you take them home!

This weekend wedding season has started for me with a stunner of a location and then a newborn girl on Sunday (SQUEEEE!). Watch out for future blogs featuring them 🙂

What a great week! In the Studio and on Location

Studio Update

“Variety’s the very spice of life, that gives it all it’s flavour.” -William Cowper

I love my job!

I know, I know I say that A LOT! But what other jobs would have me shooting Easter bunnies in the studio on Monday, getting all creative at Fife College with the extremely talented jewellery making students on Tuesday, back in the studio cake smashing on Wednesday and at a Photocall at the University of Stirling on Thursday?

Hop to it

My Easter mini sessions in the studio all happened before Easter. But poor Ella was poorly when it was her turn and I couldn’t have her missing out on being an Easter bunny, could I? So I snuck her into the studio on Easter Monday.

Child photographer near Falkirk, JB Moments Photography

How cute is she as a little bunny? VERY! Yet again though I really wish I had a camera pointing at the parents behind me. To get Ella to laugh, her Daddy was standing behind me in bunny ears beatboxing!!! I wish I’d got a shot of that.

Getting to experiment

Fife college wanted something a bit different to showcase the students work. Rather than the usual white high key images. Two of the students (the very brave and beautiful Erica and Jake) agreed to model all the pieces. I got to play in the college’s studios and with their lighting equipment so to say I was like a kid in a candy store would be an understatement! The brief was to display the jewellery unconventionally and everybody joined in the creative process so we created something weird yet also wonderful.

Jewellery Photography at Fife College

This is one of my favourite images. Jake is wearing brooches as knuckle dusters and Erica has various rings on. I think they look FIERCE!

Jewellery Photography at Fife College

And here Jake is wearing a beautiful bracelet in his hair.

Jewellery Photography at Fife College

I just love Erica’s earrings in her hair. Who knows we might have started a new trend!

I had so much fun and I got paid to do it. My job is amazing!

Smashed it!

Back in my studio on Wednesday for lovely Lucy’s cake smash for her first birthday. Her theme was ‘Some bunny is one’ so we had lots of pink, silver and white.

She was a little shy to start off with but soon warmed up and had a smashing time (sorry, not sorry!) and gave her mum, dad and grandma some precious memories to treasure.

1st birthday milestone photographs at JB Moments Photography

I even managed to steal a kiss off those gorgeous cheeks at the end (and yes she tasted of cake – delicious!).

Time for your close up

On Thursday I was back out on location again and on familiar territory at the University of Stirling. I love the jobs I get at the University for two reasons. 1) it is my University and I have a soft spot for the campus and 2) I adore all the Directorate of Internationalisation and Partnerships team. This time I was taking pictures of individuals and small groups who have secured funding through The Stirling Fund.

Flavoursome

So there you have it, never a dull moment and plenty of spice! I’m looking forward to next week as well as I have lots of model calls in the studio to test out a new collaboration that I am very excited about. Oh and before that, just the small matter of my newest nephew’s christening where I will, of course, be playing the role of family photographer and Godmother 🙂

Studio Sessions – Valentines Mini and Cake Smash!

Child Photography

Love is in the air

It’s been a busy old week at the JB Moments Photography Studio. First up was Amber for a Valentines themed Mini Session. This years theme was ‘Hearts Everywhere’ and boy did I go for it. Heart-shaped balloons, heart confetti, heart banners, heart cushions. You name it if it was heart shaped I had it.

We are not amused.

Child/Toddler Photography by JB Moments Photography

Amber fully embraced the Valentines theme as well with a cute red tutu and sequined heart top (they don’t do it in adult sizes, I checked!). But to start with she wasn’t feeling the love and Dad was worried that, whilst cute, she looked sad 🙁

Baby Shark

I often wish I had a camera pointing at the families behind me because I reckon I would’ve got some cracking images. You see Mum, Dad, Gran and Uncle were all performing the Baby Shark song to make Amber laugh.

Child/Toddler Photography by JB Moments Photography

And it worked. After several verses!!

Let them eat cake

Next up was a very special one year old. Those of you that follow me know that I normally do doughnut smashes  (in fact wee Amber is booked in for one to celebrate her first birthday). But I am happy to do fruit, spaghetti, paint…..Whatever gets nice and messy! Wee Fern’s mum had her heart set on cake so that’s exactly what we did. 🙂

But first, the sensible shot

Child/Toddler Photography by JB Moments Photography

Before we got down and dirty with the cake we marked the occasion formally! Fern couldn’t stop smiling. Especially when mum and dad where doing Paw Patrol impressions behind me (again, I need that studio cam!!).

OMG, it’s CAKE time!

Child/Toddler Photography by JB Moments Photography

Fern’s Mum found the cute banner on Etsy which went perfectly with Fern’s yellow tutu (and my ONE letters and balloons). Only a mahoosive chocolate cake would do for this little lady.

Straight to business

Child/Toddler Photography by JB Moments Photography

Some little ones aren’t too keen on the cake at first but Fern had no such issues. Straight in with both hands. Atta girl! In fact, the way she attached that cake, I think she may be my spiritual twin!

Wooden spoons – for extra messiness!

I like to add a wooden spoon into a cake smash to help the littles to destroy their cake. Fern took to it like a champ.

Child/Toddler Photography by JB Moments Photography

Good clean fun

I’m not sure who enjoyed themselves more. Fern, her parents or me! A couple of times I had camera shake as I was laughing so much.

Child/Toddler Photography by JB Moments Photography

I know I say it all the time…but…I fricken love my job.

Child/Toddler Photography by JB Moments Photography

All good things come to an end

Child/Toddler Photography by JB Moments Photography

All too soon it was over and Fern got cleaned up and back into her dinosaur onesie. I couldn’t wait to start editing her pics and got them back to her parents that evening. Much to their delight.

Next up in the studio was 10-week new Charlie, then it was a visit to Stirling Uni to capture the Consul General of Japan give his take on Brexit and in between all that frantically editing my newest nephews newborn pictures I took last week. Check out next weeks blogs for all that good stuff 🙂
