When couples first enquire with me, they often have a Pinterest board full of inspiration.
A romantic veil shot.
A confetti photo.
A gorgeous sunset portrait.
And don’t get me wrong…I absolutely love creating those.
But if you asked me which photographs make my couples laugh the hardest, cry the most and come back to years later?
They’re almost never the ones anyone planned.
They’re the split-second moments that couldn’t be recreated if we tried.
Here’s a few of my favourites.
1. When the plan goes spectacularly wrong...
The smoke bombs were supposed to create a colourful backdrop.
Instead…
One exploded straight into the bridal party.
Everyone disappeared in a cloud of smoke.
The groom couldn’t stop laughing.
The bridesmaids were crying with laughter.
Nobody cared that it had “gone wrong.”
And thirty seconds later, once the smoke settled?
We created one of my favourite wedding party photographs ever.
Sometimes Plan B is actually better than Plan A.
2. The cake cutting that nobody expected
I’ve photographed plenty of cake cuts.
I’ve never photographed one involving a six-foot claymore sword.
Watching these two try to work out how on earth to cut a cake with it while everyone looked on was priceless.
Their expressions say everything.
3. Wind has absolutely no respect for wedding timelines
Sometimes the weather creates problems.
Sometimes…
It creates magic.
This veil caught the wind for about three seconds before collapsing again.
Just enough time.
4. Pizza beats canapés
After hours of photographs, speeches and dancing…
Sometimes all anyone wants is pizza.
This wasn’t posed.
It wasn’t directed.
It was simply two newlyweds sharing a slice and laughing together.
Exactly the sort of memory worth keeping.
5. Under the veil
People often ask me how I create natural couple portraits.
The truth?
Sometimes I simply hand over the veil and let couples forget I’m there for a minute.
Those quiet little conversations often become the most romantic photographs of the day.
6. Just one more jump...
Whenever I suggest a jumping photo, someone always rolls their eyes.
Then everyone commits completely.
And suddenly you’ve got one of the happiest group photographs of the entire wedding.
7. The ceremony wasn't supposed to be this funny
One of my favourite sounds to photograph is laughter.
You can almost hear this image.
It’s impossible to fake that kind of joy.
Years later, couples rarely remember every word that was said.
They do remember how they felt.
8. Rain isn't the enemy
Scotland isn’t exactly famous for guaranteed sunshine.
Good.
Because rain can create photographs you simply couldn’t make on a dry day.
This couple embraced it completely.
The umbrella became part of the story rather than something to hide behind.
9. Children don't read the schedule
One of my favourite wedding guests was this little chap.
Everyone else was chatting politely.
He decided lying upside down across the ceremony chairs seemed like a much better idea.
Honestly?
I agreed.
10. Dogs have absolutely no concept of personal space
If your dog comes to your wedding…
Expect them to steal the show.
This wasn’t planned.
Nobody asked for a paw to land perfectly on top of the couple’s hands.
It just happened.
And now it’s one of their favourite photographs.
11. Flower girls keep us humble
You can spend months planning a wedding.
A flower girl can still spot something far more exciting happening across the room.
And that’s exactly why I love photographing children.
They remind everyone not to take the day too seriously.
12. Confetti is controlled chaos
Confetti photographs are one of the few parts of the day where I give a bit more direction.
Everything after that?
Pure chaos.
Wind.
Laughter.
Confetti in unexpected places.
And usually someone getting hit in the face.
The common thread?
None of these moments were on a wedding timeline.
None were copied from Pinterest.
None could ever happen in exactly the same way again.
That’s why they’re so special.
Beautiful portraits matter.
Family photographs matter.
But it’s often these unexpected little moments that become the stories you’ll still be telling on your first anniversary… and your fiftieth.
