One of the questions I get asked surprisingly often by couples planning their wedding is:
“Who actually walks down the aisle first?”
The answer is both simple and slightly frustrating…
It depends.
There is a traditional wedding aisle order in the UK, but these days many couples choose to put their own spin on things. Some walk in with both parents, some walk alone, some arrive together and some don’t have a processional at all.
The good news?
There are no wedding police waiting outside your venue.
So let’s look at the traditional order first, then some modern alternatives that might suit you better.
What Is The Wedding Processional?

The processional is simply the grand entrance at the start of your ceremony.
It’s the moment your guests know things are about to begin.
The music starts.
Everyone turns around.
And the people closest to you make their way down the aisle.
It’s one of the most emotional parts of the entire day, and often one of my favourite moments to photograph.
Traditional Wedding Aisle Order In The UK
A traditional UK wedding ceremony usually follows this order:
1. Guests Take Their Seats
Friends and family are seated before the ceremony begins.
Traditionally, the bride’s family sits on the left and the groom’s family sits on the right, but honestly, most modern weddings simply let guests sit wherever they like.
2. The Groom Arrives
The groom, best man and groomsmen usually make their entrance first and wait at the front.
3. Parents And Close Family Are Seated
Immediate family members are escorted to their seats.
Traditionally the mother of the bride is seated last, signalling that the ceremony is about to begin.
4. Bridesmaids, Flower Girls And Page Boys
Depending on your ceremony style, attendants may walk down the aisle before the bride.
Flower girls and page boys often steal the show at this point.

5. The Bride Makes Her Entrance
The bride enters last.
Traditionally accompanied by her father, but today this can be anyone she chooses.
I’ve photographed brides walking with:
• Their father
• Their mother
• Both parents
• Their children
• A grandparent
• Their brother
• Alone
There really is no right or wrong answer.

Can Bridesmaids Walk Before The Bride?
Absolutely.
In fact, this is one of the most common ceremony formats I see.
The bridesmaids, flower girls and page boys enter first.
Then the bride arrives on her own or with whoever is accompanying her.
This creates a lovely build-up and keeps the bride’s entrance as the big reveal.

Can I Walk Down The Aisle Alone?
Of course.
Many modern couples choose this option.
For some brides it feels empowering.
For others it’s simply practical.
And for some, family circumstances make it the most comfortable choice.
The only opinion that matters is yours.

Can Both Parents Walk Me Down The Aisle?
Yes.
In fact, I’m seeing this more and more often.
Many couples love the symbolism of both parents being part of the moment.
It also makes for some beautiful photographs and emotional reactions from guests.
What About Non-Traditional Ceremonies?
One of the joys of modern weddings is that you can create a ceremony that feels like you.
I’ve photographed weddings where:
• The couple walked in together
• Nobody walked down an aisle at all
• Children led the way
• The bride entered from a side door
• Couples had intimate ceremonies with no wedding party
The best ceremony isn’t the most traditional one.
It’s the one that feels right for the two of you.
My Advice As A Wedding Photographer
After photographing weddings across Scotland, I’ve learned that guests rarely remember whether your bridesmaids walked before or after your flower girls.
What they do remember is how they felt.
The nervous smile from the groom.
The proud look from a parent.
The excitement of the flower girls.
The moment you locked eyes at the end of the aisle.
So don’t get too caught up in the rules.
Focus on creating a ceremony that reflects your relationship.
The order of the aisle matters.
But the memories you make matter far more.
